Notes
István Csók studied in Paris for two years, at the Académie Julian, before moving back to Munich, where he spent the first half of 1890. With At the Maid Agent’s, which he made in the Bavarian Rome, he nevertheless aligns his style and attitude with contemporary French painting. The subject that reflects a subtle social critique, the objective representation of the world of the poor who serve the bourgeoisie, and the palette which is lighter than what was then customary in Munich, all seem to reflect the lessons of Parisian modernity. The scene itself is set in Paris, as is obvious from the map on the wall, and the characteristic line of the Seine on it.
