Notes
A restless, experimenting artist, János Vaszary (1867–1939) was au courant with the latest artistic trends throughout his career. A light palette based on pastel colours, a common subject, and a straightforward mode of expression make Little Girl in the Vegetable Garden another piece that was at odds with the official art of its time, the monumental compositions of the superstars – consider but Munkácsy’s Conquest of Hungary, also from 1893, or Benczúr’s The Recapture of Buda Castle from 1896. Nevertheless, what makes this representation of the young girl picking cabbage in the back garden so noteworthy are the fascinating skills of the twenty-six-year-old painter, and the maturity of the approach that turns the natural forms into a decorative pattern.
